Whereas life has a meaning, what is the purpose of an eternal afterlife (be it heaven or hell)?

well i am not a religious person in any way, and having seen someone close to me die in pain can safely say that there is no afterlife, no going onto a more spiritual plain. Believe me he would have contacted me by now if there had been something more beyond our earthly existence.
