How to use java compiler?

Ive downloaded jde and jdk and dont know how to use it. im just starting out eiht this but have been using c++ for soem time now. i found a file called javac (isnt that the compiler?? ) but i get a cmd.exe type of thing that shuts down by itself within like 2 seconds the only application there is Java VirtualVM is that what i should use?
